Ministry and Theology, otherwise know at MAT, is the program for Catechetical Certification in the Diocese of Baton Rouge. These classes are also open to anyone who is interested in taking them and not seeking Catechetical Certification. For information about Certification, please see our Certification tab.
Basic Certification – MAT I (80 Instruction Hours) are:
Conversion and Spirituality; Journey through Scripture (OT/NT); Church History; Creed; Christology; Sacraments; Morality; and Evangelization, Catechesis and Mission.
We are presently offering Catholic Identity in the Catholic School to take the place of one of the courses above for School Teachers, Counselors and Administrators. It cannot take the place of Christian Morality, however.
Intermediate Certification – MAT II (80 Instruction Hours). Intermediate courses allow greater depth of study. Again 8 Courses are required but they can vary. The traditional 9 that have been offered are:
Pentateuch; Prophets; Wisdom Literature; Luke/Acts, Pauline Literature; Johannine Literature; Sacraments of Initiation; Sacraments of Service; and Catholic Identity (now Catholic Identity in the Catholic School).
A new course titled Catechism of the Catholic Church in Catechesis is being offered regularly as an online seminar for MAT II credit as well.
Completion of MAT II gives a person the Intermediate Level of Catechetical Certification in the Diocese of Baton Rouge.
Stay tuned to see exciting new developments in our Ministry and Theology program as we develop new courses, renew the courses we presently have, and move more toward the blended learning model we have begun!
