The Summer MAT 2018 Schedule is now up on our website and you may begin registering by going here http://evangcatbr.org/registration/
Please note the changes that are taking place with the MAT courses as they will require different responsibilities from you than before – but we think you’ll like a lot of them!
We are very excited about these changes taking place in our office with the MAT courses! As many of you might already know, we have been diligently working with a small team of course developers to create new MAT courses, update existing MAT courses, putting them also into a new Learning Management System called LearnCat, which has been custom designed by our staff.
The new courses are being built using an amazing course authoring tool called Articulate/Rise. It has top-of-the-line graphics and design, creating a clean and polished presentation and learning experience. We believe the presentations being built into Articulate/Rise will surpass the dated presentations we had been using in Moodle. We hope you will agree!
A number of these classes are finished or nearly finished and integrated into LearnCat. These MAT I courses are ready to go or will soon be:
- The Catholic Faith (formerly named Creed)
- Catholic Morality
- The Catholic Scriptures (Old Testament/New Testament)
- Catholic Identity in the Catholic School
The Prophets and Wisdom Literature courses are also ready to go in the new system. More MAT I and MAT II classes are being developed as we speak. Some are simply updating and replacing the older versions with similar names and some will be all new MAT courses.
We also have some MAT I and MAT II courses that we will be retiring. These retiring courses are being laid to rest either because we are dividing out the topics covered into separate, new classes or we feel the topics might better fit at a different level (moving the topics from a MAT I to a MAT II categorization). Some of the retiring classes are: Evangelization, Catechesis, & Mission and Christian Conversion & Spirituality. We will be moving the topics of Church History and Christology to the MAT II level but they will have to be reworked and put into the new systems first.
Please note that all previous courses taken will be honored and grandfathered in. If you took a Christology or Church History course at the MAT I level then you will still have MAT I credit for it. None of that will change.
Please also note that Catholic school teachers will still be required to take 8 ten-hour MAT I courses to earn Basic Certification, but we are giving you more courses from which to choose to earn your 80 hours. Not everyone will take exactly the same eight courses to earn Basic Certification. If you see a MAT I course that you have not earned credit for yet, then you are welcome to take it and have it go towards your Basic Certification.
Some new MAT I courses you can look forward to are:
- The Sacred Liturgy
- Catholic Prayer
- The Spiritual Life, among others
These are in different stages of development right now but we hope they will all be available to you in the near future!
All of these new courses or newly redesigned courses will be in a new format where the bulk of the learning is done by the participant on his/her own time using online materials in the LearnCat system. The sessions you have with an instructor will now be much shorter, only two 1.5 hour sessions per course. These instructor-led portions will be more about discussion of the materials already covered on your own rather than new information being presented – so that will mean getting your homework done ahead of time is essential to participation. The instructor-led portions will either be in a webinar format or they will be in-person. Please see below for an outline of these changes.
We believe these new changes will meet the needs of those who might need a little more flexibility to get the work done. We are also thinking of the many school teachers and parish personnel who live and work outside of the Baton Rouge metropolitan area and prefer more distance-learning options.
As one can imagine, there are a lot of moving parts! As we move forward, some of the MAT courses are being taught in the “old” way while progress is being made to bring newer classes on board. We appreciate your understanding and your patience during this transition time. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions, though! We are here to help you!
Essentially, all of these efforts to provide you with good catechetical formation boil down to three essential goals we have in mind: 1- helping you to grow closer to God in your spiritual lives, 2- assisting you in better understanding the Catholic faith (which we love – and hope you do, too!), and 3- equipping you to bring the Good News out into your homes, workplaces and into the world! We work hard on all of these initiatives because we care about you and we want to provide you with good things in your faith and spiritual lives to bolster you on the road of life. 🙂
New Course Structure Changes
